What Is a BIN Checker?

A BIN (Bank Identification Number), also known as an IIN (Issuer Identification Number), consists of the first six digits of a credit or debit card number. With these six digits, a BIN checker can quickly identify key details about the card issuer, such as the bank name, card type, country of origin, and additional card attributes.

For example, entering a BIN like 852369 or 159862 into our tool will return information about the issuing institution and card network. Simply avoid entering non-numeric strings (e.g., “www.card.com”) or full card numbers.

Structure of Credit & Debit Card Numbers

Credit and debit card numbers follow the ISO/IEC 7812 standard, which can extend up to 19 digits in the following format:

A BBBBB CCCCCCCCCCCC D
  • A (1 digit): Major Industry Identifier (MII), indicating the industry category (e.g., 4 = Visa, 5 = MasterCard).
  • BBBBB (5 digits): Issuer Identification Number (IIN/BIN), identifying the issuing bank or financial institution.
  • CCCCCCCCCCCC (up to 12 digits): Individual account number, uniquely assigned to the cardholder’s account.
  • D (1 digit): Checksum digit, calculated via the Luhn algorithm to validate the entire number.

How to Use the BIN Checker

  1. Locate the six-digit BIN on the front of your credit or debit card (not the expiration date or CVV code).
  2. Navigate to the Free BIN Checker section on our site.
  3. Enter the first six digits and click the "Check BIN" button.
  4. Review the detailed issuer information displayed.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Ensure you enter only the first six numeric digits—no spaces, letters, or symbols.
  • If an error appears, double-check that you selected the correct card face (front vs. back) and did not confuse the BIN with the CVV or expiry date.
  • Remember that some BINs may be reserved or inactive; in such cases, our tool will indicate if issuer data is unavailable.
